Exercise: Focal length and different viewpoints

In this exercise I am encouraged to use different lenses and viewpoints of the same subject.

Aberdeen University- The new library
The pictures where taken on 29.1.2012. I have slighty cropped and aligned the images.

I choose the corner to show the bold design of the glas panels.

This image was taken from across the street, the tree may assisst to give it some scale

Image 4054, 18mm
A corner shot to hopefully show that this building is big cube. With the wide angle lense I managed to get a fair amount of the building into the frame.

Image 4055, 51mm
For this image I stood back to show the patters and also to give a little insight of the building and its scale.

Image 4056, 33mm
Again from further back, leaving the surrounding space to indicate that the side is a square.
At this point I was looking for other potential viewpoints, but rain and hail came down.
Overall it was still an interesting shoot using I hope unusual angles. A polarising filter could help looking inside

Exercise: focal length

The aim is to take a series of pictures of one subject and change the focal length.
Bridge of Dun, near Montrose
The pictures where taken on 21.1.2012

For the exercise using this old bridge worked well, though it does not give the bridge full justice. There was a lot of undergrowth on this riverbank, obscruring the view. although it adds interest in the last image.
I imagine this bridge will feature again for different viewpoints and light conditions.

Exercise: A sequence of composition

People on Union Street, Aberdeen

The aim is to take some 20 - 30 images of people at an public event, without taking too much time to get the perfect picture. This exercise will stretch my comfort zone as I have rarely taken pictures of the Cityscape or of people. I rarely venture into a town or city. The other problem is that I do not know of any upcoming public event.
I have delayed going into Aberdeen to go to a couple of shops, waiting for a wet day. However I would passing close to the centre and thought to seek images quickly of the event called 'Daily Life'.
I chose to fit the 55-250mm lens for greater flexibility and set Auto ISO.
To start with I was hesitant taking pictures of the many strangers and took also pictures of other things I noticed. I was surprised that some people talked to me and 3 started to pose. I took all pictures as soon as I noticed, many while still walking.
I did not crop any of the images, with some I made adjustments to light and contrast.

Its been an interesting experience and great variety of possible image can be found. Working fast with zoom and focus is also good practice.

Exercise: Object in different positions in the frame

The task was to find a subject in an even background and place it in different positions of the frame.
The images 3875 to 3879 where taken on 18.1.2012, ISO125,f5,1/200second, 135mm
The horse was standing still on a slight slope, but to get better hight to get grass all around the horse I also stood on a wall. The horse is not well at present and sees the Vet daily, so I took the pictures from a greater distance.
In this image the horse seems to come out of the bottom left hand corner with room to move forward

It appears it has moved into the centre

It appears to have moved to the top right hand corner
In this image the horse appears to be trapped

To me the first image seems to work best, it appears that the horse has come from somewhere and has plenty of space to head elswhere. In this series I find the last picture least effective as the horse appears to me to be trapped

Exercise:Fitting the frame to the subject, Part 2

Tolbooth Restaurant and Musuem, Stonehaven
The Image 3842 was taken on 16.1.2012. ISO 100, 1/400second, f4
The exercise is to crop the image in different ways
This is the origanal image

First crop, the building is in the topright corner

The crop is is around the building

the building is placed in the bottom left

a centred portrait crop

a square crop
Each crop shows the same building in a different way

Exercise:Fitting the frame to the subject

A streetlight with a difference, Stonehaven
For this exercise I had to fit the subject tightly into the frame.
The images where taken on 16.1.2012,ISO 100,
As I noticed the streetlight I took a photograph without thinking too much about it, 1/40 second,f4

In this picture I wanted to capture closer details of the light,1/25second,f5

Details of a different angle,1/40second,f4
This viewpoint is from the street, with the light just fitting into the frame. I had chosen the potrait picture as i think it is better suited for it, 1/30second,f4
